IJAHIS IDJA´S 10TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS GENERATIONS TOGETHER IN INARI

The Ijahis idja Music Festival of Indigenous Peoples publishes its full programme today. The theme of this year's festival which will be held on 16 - 18 of August is Generations, and the programme will be more varied than ever. The 10th anniversary of Ijahis idja will be celebrated with the Generations jubilee concert on Saturday at the Auditorium of Sajos Sámi Cultural Centre. The concert gathers Sámi musicians of different generations together to play Sámi classics as well as newer production. The concert features performances by Niko Valkeapää, one of the most well-known Sámi artists, as well as the the traditional yoik artist Niiles-Jouni Aikio, the renowned Sámi musician Annukka Hirvasvuopio-Laiti and, representing the young generation, Sunná Länsman. The performances are accompanied by the Ijahis idja band conducted by the veteran musician Janne Lappalainen.

NIKO VALKEAPÄÄ TO HEADLINE IJAHIS IDJA ON THE FESTIVAL´S 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Music Festival of Indigenous Peoples, Ijahis idja (Nightless Night) will celebrate its tenth anniversary on 16 – 18 August 2013, in the village of Inari. In the course of ten years, Ijahis idja has grown into one of the North's major festivals and a prime showcase for the musical culture of its indigenous peoples. Nowadays, the event is held at Sajos Sámi Cultural Centre and on the surrounding temporary festival grounds. This year’s theme is Generations, based on the idea of bringing Sámi musicians of different generations together, to form a cultural meeting place for Sámi of all ages.

The headliner of this year's festival is Niko Valkeapää and his band. Valkeapää is a Sámi artist of international renown who recently (2012) released two new albums, Gusto and ÄÄ. Valkeapää's music captivates the listener with its beautiful melodies, catchy guitar riffs and lyrics addressing contemporary issues. At Ijahis idja, Niko Valkeapää and his band will give a full-length concert, starting at 8 pm at the Auditorium of Sajos Sámi Cultural Centre, on Friday, 16 August.

WIND PLAYS MUSIC SEMINAR AT IJAHIS IDJA 18.8.2012 AT 12.00-16.00

In 2012, the indigenous peoples’ music festival Ijahis Idja has the play of wind as its theme.The music seminar of Ijahis Idja follows the themes of the festival. In the seminar at Sajos in Inari, we will hear about new winds in the sphere of indigenous music.The speakers of the seminar come from Greenland, Finland, Norway and the Komi Republic.At this international seminar, the Finnish, Sámi, English and Russian languages will be used.Interpretation will be available for the audience.The seminar is arranged by the Sámi Museum Siida, Sámi Education Institute and Giellagas-Institute.

AILU VALLE´S RAP ALBUM IN SÁMI LANGUAGE WILL BE RELEASED AT THE WEEKEND IN IJAHIS IDJA INARI

27 years old Ailu Valle from Utsjoki’s Kaamasmukka will make a history of Sámi language rap music at Ijahis idja on August 18thwhen he releases Finland’s first rap album in northern Sámi. The album is also Ailu Valle’s debut album and at gigs during the few past years he has proved that he knows how to rhyme in Sámi language.

SÁMI LAND GOES RETRO AT IJAHIS IDJA IN INARI

On Friday 17thof August Ijahis idja – the music festival of indigenous peoples will travel back in time to the Sámi land 30 years ago at the Sápmi goes retro club in the Tradition Hotel Kultahovi. The club audience can empathize to retro atmosphere through themed music, dress code, eatables and drinks. The live music will be performed by Ámmun Jonskareng and Halvdan Nedrejord, who both are well-known Sámi artists. DJ Oula also known as Oula-Antti Labba from Pousujärvi, Käsivarsi area will entertain the club audience with retro music suited for theme.

This year, performers will come from as far away as Greenland: the rock band Nanook will play at Ijahis idja, performing in Greenlandic.

Ijahis idja has been held in Inari since 2004 and has grown from each year to the next. Today Ijahis idja is one of the most important summer events in the North of Europe. Ijahis idja means “Nightless Night” in the North Sámi language.
