From Karelia to the Skolt Sámi Lands
Karjalasta kolttien maille (From Karelia to the Skolt Sámi lands) project is Anna Lumikivi’s, Erkki Lumisalmi’s, Amanda Kauranne’s and Emmi Kuittinen’s journey to cultural heritage and their own roots. The project, which began in 2020, examines the common heritage and special characteristics of the Skolt Sámi and Karelians. The project culminated in November 2024 with an album that combines new and traditional Skolt Sámi and Karelian folk music. The album Karjalasta kolttien maille was also nominated for the Vuoden Etno (Ethno of the Year) 2024 at the Emma Gaala.
The ensemble’s repertoire includes lullabies, leuʹdds, dance songs, laments, rune songs and old beliefs dressed up in the form of music in Skolt Sámi, Karelian and Finnish. Vocal traditions are at the centre, but the repertoire also includes various acoustic instruments. At Ijahis idja, Anna Lumikivi, Erkki Lumisalmi, Amanda Kauranne and Katri Kittilä will be seen on stage.
