Marja Mortensson

Marja Mortensson is a Southern Sámi yoiker and singer from Norway. She draws inspiration for her music from everyday Sámi life, the meaning of nature, and a desire to focus on the Southern Sámi language and traditions.

In her music, traditional yoik meets modern, multiple, simplified accompaniment, where the voice plays a central role. Mortensson has participated in projects that revive the traditional yoik tradition. She has won international first and second prizes, and her production combines traditional yoik with modern sound in a unique way.

In 2024, she released the album Båalmaldahkesne – Entwined, which deals with how people’s lives and cultures are all intertwined.
